A user's guide to hosting on Cpanel and Cheap Linux Hosting in India.

Linux Hosting

Linux hosting is very flexible and is much easier to control, not to mention licensing issues where Linux is free and Windows comes with a price. Take Cpanel for a moment. Cpanel is a control panel built for hosting, but works on Linux. This is probably one of the more popular control panels in the industry and works well with Linux. You can have multiple FTP accounts, offer a jail version which is a VPS oriented which gives root access and still under a shared environment.

On the whole, Linux hosting is cheaper, some say faster and easier to use. In the opinions of Linux users, Linux is more stable and does not require system shutdowns every time an upgrade, patch implementation or install is implemented. Again, this reduces downtime and shows the resilience of next generation hosting.

Linux

Linux is a Unix-like computer operating system. Linux is one of the most prominent examples of free software and open source development. The name "Linux" comes from the Linux kernel, started in 1991 by Linus Torvalds. The system's utilities and libraries usually come from the GNU operating system, announced in 1983 by Richard Stallman. Predominantly known for its use in servers, Linux is supported by corporations such as Dell, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Novell, Oracle Corporation, Red Hat, and Sun Microsystems. It is used as an operating system for a wide variety of computer hardware, including desktop computers, supercomputers, video game systems and embedded devices such as mobile phones and routers.

Linux Web Hosting

Historically, Linux has mainly been used as a server operating system, and has risen to prominence in that area; Netcraft reported in February 2008 that five of the ten most reliable internet hosting companies run Linux on their web servers. This is due to its relative stability and long uptime, and the fact that desktop software with a graphical user interface for servers is often unneeded. Enterprise and non-enterprise Linux distributions may be found running on servers. Linux is the cornerstone of the LAMP server-software combination (Linux, Apache, MySQL, Perl/PHP/Python) which has achieved popularity among developers, and which is one of the more common platforms for website hosting.

Many quantitative studies of open source software focus on topics including market share and reliability, with numerous studies specifically examining Linux. The Linux market is growing rapidly, and the revenue of servers, desktops, and packaged software running Linux is expected to exceed $35.7 billion by 2008. IDC's report for Q1 2007 says that Linux now holds 12.7% of the overall server market. This estimate was based on the number of Linux servers sold by various companies. It is believed that Linux will continue to aquire greater share of server market.

Cheap Linux Hosting in India

Linux hosting is very popular among Indian companies because it is relatively much cheaper than Windows web hosting. Cost is an important factor in Indian web hosting industry and the availbility of cheap linux servers is helping fuel the growth of Indian hosting industry. The increasing use of PHP as the scripting language and MySQL as the database software, is also increasing the demand for Linux hosting in India.

cPanel Hosting

cPanel (control Panel) is a graphical web-based web-hosting control panel, designed to make administration of websites easy. cPanel handles all aspects of website administration in its interface. The software, which is proprietary and distributed by cPanel, Inc., is designed for use by commercial web hosting services, so the company does not offer a reduced-cost personal use license; however, owners of non-profit organizations such as educational institutions and charities can request a license at a free or reduced cost. Reduced prices are frequently available from dedicated-server companies, who install it along with the operating system. cPanel runs on a number of popular Linux distributions, such as SUSE, Fedora, Mandriva, CentOS, Red Hat Enterprise Linux as well as FreeBSD.
