Domain Name Registration India PDF Print E-mail

A user's guide to Indian domain name registration, Indian domain names registry and web sites in India.

Domain Names

A domain name is a set of characters that identifies one or more IP addresses. Domain names are used in URLs to identify particular Web pages. For example, in the URL http://www.webhostinginindia.org/hosting-guide.htm, the domain name is webhostinginindia.org Every domain name has a suffix that indicates which top level domain (TLD) it belongs to. There are only a limited number of such domains. For example:

# .gov - domain names for Government agencies
# .edu - domain names for Educational institutions
# .org - domain names for Organizations (nonprofit)
# .mil - domain names for Military
# .com - domain name for commercial business
# .net - domain name for Network organizations
# .in - India specific domain name for Indian companies
# .co.in - India

Because the Internet is based on IP addresses, not domain names, every Web server requires a Domain Name System (DNS) server to translate domain names into IP addresses.

Domain Name Registration in India

A number of Indian companies now work as domain registrars in India. Initially, the domain name registration was limited to Network Solutions but since the opening up of the doain name registration market, a number of Indian and international providers have joimed the domain market. Most of the players are big web hosting companies who used to work as resellers for Network solutions. Now they have either become domain name registrars themselves or are often using services of an Indian domain registrar.

The availability of .in domains gave a big boost to the Indian domain registration market, with large volumes of domains being registered. With the Indian economy booming, most international companies are now also registering their Indian domain names. As the government, private companies, schools, colleges, universities, even shops and individuals - all becoming web enabled, the need for registering domain names and having a website has grown exponentially in India. The avilability of broadband, penetration of PC's and laptops, and availability of mobile internet devices is also fuelling the Indian domain name registration market.
